Obituary

Cmdr. George Gamel McElveen Jr. (U/S. Navy retired), 54, died Friday, July 13, 2001, in Hampton, Va.

Born in Salisbury, he had been a Hampton resident for 19 years.

Cmdr. McElveen retired from the U.S. Navy in 1997 after 28 years of service to his country. This included service during the Vietnam and Persian Gulf Wars. He was member of Central United Methodist Church in Mooresville. Cmdr. McElveen is survived by his wife Gayle McElveen; his children Patrick McElveen and Natalie Greer, both of Hampton; his father, George Gamel McElveen Sr. of Mooresville; his sisters, and brothers Brenda Troutman of Concord, Elaine Ballard, Christa Owens and Ronald McElveen, all of Mooresville; four nieces and one nephew.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Central United Methodist Church in Mooresville by the Rev. Phil DeBerry.

The family wishes expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, 801 N. Randolph St., Ste. 122-A, Arlington, Va. 22203.
